COLLECTION

1st February 2021

Coterie Wine Collection focuses on offering its on and off trade partners wines from small, family-owned brands from Australia, Northern Italy, and Eastern France. In this post we would like to introduce our Northern Italian brands.

Ellena Giuseppe, Piedmont

Located in La Mora, Piedmont, the 15-hectare farm is comprised of five hectares of vines, the rest being hazelnuts and woodlands. The farm has been in the family for 50 years and there are three generations, Francesco, his son Giuseppe, and the grandson Matteo, all involved in the vine growing. All wines undergo indigenous yeast fermentations with soft vinification for the young wines and long and traditional skin contact for Nebbiolo.  For your and your customer’s enjoyment we have 5 of Ellena’s wines available:
  •   LANGHE NASCETTA DOC Very popular until the end of the 1800’s when it was basically abandoned. Was rediscovered about 10 years age and still there are only 10 hectares throughout the World. Fermented in cool tanks and left on lees for nine months. Lovely floral aromas and pear and melon palate with a great mineral finish.
  • LANGHE NEBBIOLO DOC Grown on calcareous soils at about 280 meters the grapes are fermented with wild yeast. Malolactic fermentation is carried out in tank before maturation in seasoned oak. A great example of an approachable Nebbiolo at the right price.
  • BARBERA D’ALBA SUPERIORE ALFERI DOC Barbera fruit was hand-picked from Alferi Vineyard in La Morra and wild fermented with 14 days maceration on skins with frequent cap punch-downs. Malolactic fermentation and maturation is in French barriques (25% new and 75% second-year barrels) for about 24 months prior summer bottling without filtration and 6-9 months bottle ageing.
  • BAROLO LA MORRA DOCG Generally harvested in the middle of October, the fruit is wild fermented with 60 days maceration on skins with frequent early punch downs. Malolactic fermentation and maturation is in barriques for 30-months before bottling without filtration. Perfect balance of fruit and tannin, the hallmarks of a great wine.
  • BAROLO ASCHERI DOCG Nebbiolo for this wine comes from 1 hectare of South-West facing slopes of Ascheri Vineyard in La Morra. Grapes harvested in the middle of October, macerated on skins for 45 -60 then fermented for 10 days with frequent cap punch-downs. The wine is then left on skins with cap submerged for 5 –7 weeks. The wine is then barrelled down into barriques where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and further matured for about 30 months. Finally, the wine gets bottled in summer without filtration and bottle aged for 9 – 12 months.

    Cantina d’Isera, Trentino

Early in the 1900’s the viticulturists around the hills of Isera in Trentino, started Cantina d’Isera by harvesting the precious grapes from the dark basaltic hills, primarily among them Marzemino. This variety was made famous by Mozart, being mentioned in his opera, Don Giovanni, which premiered in 1787! The vine requires a long growing season and ripens late.  From the spiritual home of Marzemino we have two magnificent examples of wine made from this variety available. These wines represent great value:
    • TRENTINO MARZEMINO DOC This wine has characterized perfumed cherry flavours which are well integrated with the soft tannins and acid.
    • TRENTINO SUPERIORE MARZEMINO ‘CORE’ DOC Hand-selected grapes harvested exclusively from the basaltic soils of Marano d’Isera and boasting the highest quality. The full, balanced, and refined flavour is enhanced by long aging.

Fedrizzi Cipriano, Trentino

The farm Fedrizzi Cipriano has produced wine from its own vineyards for 5 generations. The first vinification started in 1870. The red varieties grown are mainly Lagrein and Teroldego. Now, the vine growing is managed by Giovanni Fedrizzi who was educated at Istituto Agrario di Sam Michele all’Adige but still carries his father’s knowledge and experience.
